Thank you for enrolling in CGS2100, Office Applications. I would like to welcome you to this Online course.  I am looking forward to working with each of you and hope that you will find the class both enjoyable and informative. My name is Mrs. Sandy Keeter and I am the instructor for the course. Please visit the course site at http://www2.scc-fl.edu/skeeter and review the course syllabus. You may e-mail me at keeters@mail.scc-fl.edu if you have any questions.

Distance Learning Considerations

To succeed in a Web-based course, you should be motivated, self-directed, and willing to work on your own.  This type of course is not for everyone.  If you like to interact regularly in person with a professor and classmates, this is probably not the course for you.  If you can solve computer problems on your own without asking for much help, this type of instruction should work well for you.  Good time management skills, self-discipline, and motivation, are required to complete the course at a distance. It is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL that you have the required personal skills in order to be successful in a online class

Course Description

This is a beginning course in using the program Microsoft Office 2007, covering Windows, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. To take the course in the on-line format, however, you must have basic computer skills such as using e-mail, navigating the Web, and using the keyboard and mouse.  Exams will be administered on-line using SAM2007 and assignments will be submitted online in Zip files.

Hardware and Software Requirements

You are required to have access to a computer with Internet access, an e-mail address, and be familiar with using e-mail and Internet usage.  For best results, please use a version 5 or later Internet browser.

For this course you will need to use the software program Microsoft Office 2007.  This software should contain Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. The SCC bookstore sells Microsoft Office software for $100 - $250 depending on the suite (http://www.journeyed.com/home.asp).  Please be aware that the Student/Teacher version does NOT contain Access 2007, which you will need for CGS2100/2108, but you can obtain Access for free through the MSDNAA program (more about this once the course starts). Please refer to the following link for additional information about the Microsoft Office suites:  http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/suites/default.aspx.

You may also come on campus and use our computers to complete your assignments, but this will mean MANY hours in an SCC lab so it is highly recommended that you take the class on campus if you cannot obtain and install the software on your home computer.

You must also have a virus checker program on your computer such as McAfee or Norton so that you do not transmit a virus to the instructor or anyone in the class.

Getting Started

Before the term starts, it is REQUIRED that you do the following:

bullet

Visit the Web site and review the syllabus. The address is listed at the top of this letter (click on the correct course and Term).  Ninety-five percent of your questions are answered in the syllabus.  If you click Login, you will not be able to enter the course.  I will enter your Id and password so that you can enter the course no later than the first or second day of the term.  If you register during the Add/Drop period, there will be a slight delay getting your login and password entered in ANGEL. Before class starts, you can review ANGEL Information at the following address: http://ecampus.scc-fl.edu. At this link you will find important links about ANGEL that you will need to use during the term.

bullet

Click on http://www.scc-fl.edu/dl/students/ which is the Student Support Information on the DL page. Visit the four links listed under student support. Find out if Distance Learning is right for you by completing the Successful Distance Learning Skills Survey.

bullet

ANGEL is designed to support the widest variety of client-side operating systems and client-side browsers through its limited use of client-side technologies. While ANGEL products generally function well in many browsers, the following are formally supported and tested:
• With PCs running Windows OS: Internet Explorer, Firefox and Mozilla
• With Macs running OS X: Firefox and Mozilla
Testing is performed on the latest generally available versions for the above platforms and browsers with each General Release of ANGEL products, ensuring full support at that time. For additional information on browser support please visit http://support.angellearning.com.

bullet

Purchase the textbooks and review them so that you can see the depth of the work and assignment material.  Reviewing the syllabus on the Web site and the textbooks will give you an idea of what will be expected of you in the course.

bullet Be sure you have the required software, Microsoft Office 2007, installed on your computer. You must also have a working e-mail and Internet access by the first day of the term. There is no slack time and you must have everything in place on Day One.

Withdrawal Policy

All class meetings are online.  This is how you attend class. To avoid being withdrawn from the class, you MUST log into ANGEL during the first week of the class and fill out the online survey.  If you do NOT login, you may be subject to being withdrawn from the course per SCC policy (if I haven’t heard from you via other means).  Students who are administratively withdrawn for lack of online attendance will NOT be reinstated under any circumstances.  Please be aware of this policy.

Required Textbook Plus SAM

Textbooks may be purchased at the SCC bookstore or ordered online at www.scc.bkstr.com. The text for this class is Microsoft Office 2007, Introductory Concepts and Techniques, by Shelly, Cashman, and Vermaat plus SAM 2007 for testing. The ISBN # for this bundle is 1428392106.

There is ONE copy of the textbook in the library which may be checked out for use in the library only and for a maximum of two hours.

SAM (Skills Assessment Manager) is testing and training software that you purchase bundled with the textbook.  You will need to download and install this on your home computer. If you purchase a used book or a book from another source other than the bundled package sold in the SCC bookstore, you will need to purchase a SAM2007 keycode separately. If you used SAM in a previous class, you may have to purchase the NEW version if the old one cannot be reactivated.

ANGEL

This course will be conducted online within the Angel environment. ANGEL is a course management program where much of the course resides and which allows for course delivery over the internet. Student tracking, lecture notes, grades, and testing will take place within the ANGEL environment. You cannot actually enter the course on the site until the Term begins and I place your name and ID into ANGEL. I will have you entered hopefully within a day after the term starts.  You will need an ID and Password to enter the course.  The URL for Angel at SCC is:  http://ecampus.scc-fl.edu/angel/frames.aspx.

You will need to have your Angel Login ID and Password ready to log in to Angel. If you have any difficulty logging into Angel, please fill out the online problem form available at: http://www.scc-fl.edu/dl/students/problem-form.php or call the DL office at (407) 328-2424 (L-110, Sanford/Lake-Mary campus).

Your ANGEL ID:

Your login ID for ANGEL is the same ID that you created in order to use MySCC (http://my.scc-fl.edu).  All ANGEL IDs must be entered in lowercase; ANGEL is case sensitive.

Your ANGEL Password:

Your password is auto-generated and is reset to the default every semester.  The default Password is your first and last initial, followed by the six digits of your birth date in the yymmdd format, where yy is the two digit year (don't use the 19 in the 19yy format) mm is the two digit month (Jan.-Sept. months must use a leading 0) dd is the two digit day (1st-9th must use a leading 0. Make sure that there are no spaces between the items and the letters are lowercase.  Example: If your name is John Doe and you were born on March 1, 1977 your password would be: jd770301.  You must use both your ANGEL ID and your ANGEL password in order to enter the course.

As soon as you are able to log into ANGEL ( http://ecampus.scc-fl.edu/angel/frames.aspx ).  Check out the Getting Started link and complete the "Course Sign-in Survey" and Intro Post.  Refer to the Syllabus, Schedule and Discussion Boards for further instructions.

You must have everything in place the first day of class.  This entire course will be conducted on-line.  Good luck and again, I very much look forward to working with you in this course.
