INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA   EXAM 1 GR1    NAME _______________________

SHOW ALL WORK ON THIS TEST OR ON SEPARATE PAPER.  Circle answers.

TURN IN ALL WORKSHEETS.  CALCULATORS ARE REQUIRED ON THIS TEST.

In 1 - 4, evaluate the expressions:

 1.      (−5 ) · ( −11 ) + 8 · (−8)                                           2.     2 [3 5(4) ]

3.     42 62                                  4.                         5.

 6a)                                                  7a)

  b)                                                    b)

  c)

  8.  Simplify according to the laws of exponents.

In 9 - 12, solve for x:

  9.    4x − (2 − 2x)  =  6(x  − 2)  +  10          10.   4x − 6(3 − 2x)  =  4(x − 2) − 2(2 + 5 x)

11.   |2x – 3 | =  – 7                                         12.    |2x – 3 | =  7

In 13 - 16, solve for x, graph on a numberline, and give answers in interval notation.

13.    –2 x +6    4                                         14.

15a)    x  ≥ 6    and    x  –3                       16a)    x  –4    and   x < 2

     b)   x    6     or    x    –3                           b)   x  ≥ –4    or    x < 2

17a).     (5x  - 4y)2                                    17b)     [(5x – 4y) – 6] [(5x – 4y) + 4]

In 18 - 20, an equation is required.  Show all work!!

18.       A box contains nickels, dimes, and quarters worth a total of $16.75.  The number of dimes is twice the number of quarters, and the number of nickels is 5 less than four times the number of dimes.  How many of each coin are there?

19.       A woman invests $20,000, some at 6% and the rest at 9%.  If the total interest earned in one year is $1560, how much was invested at each rate?

20.       How much water must be added to 60 liters of 80% acid solution in order to dilute the solution to 20%?   How much 20% solution will there be?
