Academic Integrity

You are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic honesty and integrity while in this course and as a student at Seminole Community College. If you fail to maintain these standards as a student in this class I will pursue the fullest possible implementation of academic discipline for your offense. If you have any questions about the college's code of academic conduct, please consult the Seminole State catalog or me. In short, lying, cheating, stealing, or deception of any type will not be tolerated in any way, shape, or form.

Although students are encouraged to seek assistance from their instructor, fellow students, and lab assistants, each student must submit their own work. This means you may not use another student's work as your own. You may not allow another student to use your work. You may not obtain copies of prior semester's work or exams from previous students for your own use. Students that submit duplicate work will receive a zero for the first infraction and an automatic “F” in the course for their second infraction. (Student Handbook - Section I - Academic Integrity and Classroom Behavior). If you live with someone else that is taking this class, or sharing a computer with someone else taking this class, it is your responsibility to ensure the other person does not have access to your files.

Calendar/Weekly Schedule/Attendance

The recommended schedule of activities is provided to help you organize your time and create some structure in the course; it does not provide 'slack' time. You may choose to work at your own pace but it is important that you adhere to the due dates. It is suggested that you post a copy of the calendar where you will see it so you do not miss due dates. Work not submitted by the required date will not be accepted unless prior arrangements have been made.

If you miss class, it is your responsibility to make up the time in the Lab (check the website http://www.seminolestate.edu/cts/labhours to find the lab hours for each campus) or at your home or work computer. I recommend that you attend all classes. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class, so be sure to check in after class if you arrive late (for online students your attendance is noted through Angel participation). You are responsible for assuring that your presence is noted. A student, who is absent from class 10% of the scheduled class time, is subject to being dropped without warning by the instructor.

You may withdraw from class by visiting the registration office or via the MySeminole State link from the Seminole State homepage (www.seminolestate.edu). The deadline to withdraw is usually no later than when 70% of the class has been completed. After the deadline, your instructor can withdraw you from class, but you must send a written notice or an email to your instructor requesting a "W".  Students who fail to withdraw will be graded with zeroes for the incomplete assignments and exams and the earned grade will be assigned (usually an "F"). Remember, it is your responsibility to withdraw from class if you can no longer attend.

A student who has to be absent because of jury duty, a court-mandated appearance or a religious observance that would result in a missed exam, must contact the instructor within 24 hours to schedule a make-up exam before the next class period.

Any student who has a disability and is in need of special services should contact Disability Support Services (Room S-002, Phone 407-708-2109) by the second week of class.

 Assignments (165 points)

The directions for all assignments will be provided. You are responsible for all information in the text book, unless otherwise stated in the assignment dropbox.

Instructions for downloading Student Data Files can be found on the inside back cover of the textbook or you can copy the files from Seminole State's network: G:\Datalib\CGS2100\...  (choose the appropriate application folder/file).

Due dates are indicated on the schedule provided. A due date indicates the date that you should have the assignment finished and turned in to the instructor. Assignments will not be accepted late unless prior arrangements have been made.

The points for each student assignment are specified earlier in the syllabus. You may also complete additional SAM projects for extra credit (up to 30 points). In addition to accomplishing the intent of the assignment, points will be deducted from your assignment grade, if you don’t follow the directions below for each of the requirements:

Exams (100 points)

You will complete four exams during the course of the semester. These exams will be directly related to the material from your assignments. They will be password protected and administered according to the date on your calendar. No exam will be taken late unless prior arrangements have been made and must be completed before the next class meeting.

All exams will be taken in the Skills Assessment Manager (SAM 2007), covering Office 2007 (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint). Practice tests will be available before the actual test is taken. SAM 2007 can be loaded for use at home. The Institutional Key for SAM installation at home is V7246694. You must have Internet Explorer 5.0 or later and a live Internet connection to run SAM (to run SAM at home, your computer must also meet specific system requirements - see SAM Student Tutorial for more info).

Network, E-mail and Internet Access:

Each semester, when the network administrator inputs network login ID's, they are created as locked or disabled. The first time logging on an Seminole State computer, EVERY student MUST login using MYID to unlock their account to use campus computers. (Distance learning students may come to campus to do work, but will not be able to login to the network until you've unlocked your personal login ID.)

Username/ID: Your network login ID will be the same as what you created on MySeminole State (my.scc-fl.edu) when registering for classes.  On-campus students may use a generic log-in for the first week of class (usually MCStudent) and look up their log-in ID in the classroom. If you did not create a MySeminole State login name when registering for classes, you won't have a network login and mailbox.

Password: Your Password is your first and last initial, followed by the six digits of your birth date in the YYMMDD format, where YY is the two digit year (don't use the 19 in the 19YY format) MM is the two digit month (Jan-Sep months must use a leading 0) DD is the two digit day (1st-9th must use a leading 0). Make sure that there are no spaces between the items and the letters are lowercase.  Example: If your name is John Doe and you were born on March 1, 1977 your password would be: jd770301.

Due to severe penalties for misuse, you are cautioned to review your Student Handbook regarding the ethical use of this resource.  It may be necessary sometime during the semester to email assignments to the instructor. All Seminole State students are issued an email account (MyMail), which is recommended for large file sizes or multiple file attachments. (Students are encouraged to use Angel when communicating with instructor).

Seminole State email can be accessed through: https://mymail.scc-fl.edu/. Your Username and Password should be the same as your MySeminole State login.  Students should use Seminole State email or Angel when communicating with instructors since many outside emails get caught by our Spam filtering program.

"Lab Rules" and "Lab Hours" can be found on line and accessible from any student desktop in any Seminole State lab. The URL for lab policies is: http://www.seminolestate.edu/library/aboutus/use_computers_media.htm, lab hours can be found at http://www.seminolestate.edu/cts/labhours.

Microsoft Certified Application Specialist Program

The Microsoft Certified Application Specialist Program is explained in detail in Appendix G of the textbook. This certification provides a valuable industry credential or proof that you have the Office application skills required by employers. Our textbook is a Microsoft-approved textbook that covers the required objectives for the various exams. The Web page http:/www.scsite.com/off2007/cert includes links to general information on certification, choosing an application for certification, preparing for the certification exam, and taking and passing the certification exam.

MSDN Academic Alliance Software:

Seminole State is a member of the Microsoft Developer's Network Academic Alliance. As a member, all of the software licensed under the MSDNAA Program is available for download to registered students. Simply go to http://msdn06.e-academy.com/scc-fl_net and click on the Software tab to see a complete listing of software available.

You will receive an email after the second week of the term, to your Seminole State email account (mymail.scc-fl.edu). This email will give you a user id and password so you can access this software download site. Be sure to check your email regularly starting the second week of class. If you don’t access emails within several weeks from your Seminole State account, the emails are deleted.

There is an Angel site for MSDNAA assistance for students needing help downloading and installing software. Go to ecampus.scc-fl.edu to login to this site.

Read and work through Chapters thoroughly, so you understand material for testing.

This is a tough schedule for many to keep up with...don't fall behind!

You will be responsible for all material in the textbook, Microsoft Office 2007 Introductory Concepts and Techniques, unless otherwise instructed (some items may be done for Extra Credit). You should try to complete the exercises in every chapter.

You must enter your name, the chapter or the case problem number on each file. Each dropbox has specific instructions as to where to include your name.

It is your responsibility to work through the entire textbook while sitting at your computer. Practice tests should be taken in the Skills Assessment Manager (SAM) prior to every test date.

Instructions for Submitting Assignments

bullet

All assignments will be submitted in Angel via the appropriate assignment dropbox. Do not send your assignments to one of your instructors via email.

bullet

When completing a chapter tutorial, you will attach the completed project file to the appropriate assignment dropbox.

bullet

Read dropbox instructions carefully to be sure you have included all requirements for each assignment.

bullet

Your name must be a part of each submitted file. Read the dropbox instructions to find out specifically how this should be done for each assignment. The method for entering your name on a project may be different for each assignment. For example, sometimes we may ask you to have your name in the footer...another project may ask for your name in the document properties, etc.

bullet When submitting a SAM project, record/attach your highest grade report for that project in the proper dropbox. Upon completion the SAM project, go to SAM Reports (may have to wait 10 minutes after completing assignment for the report to show up). Select correct Report type (Exam or Project), then Report as "Study Guide", click correct Project or Exam from list, Generate Report (make sure you allow popups or you will not see report), then click "print using PDF" and you will be given the option to SAVE this report showing your completed project and grade (save with appropriate file name and known location so you can find it later). Only the PDF file will be accepted when you submit SAM projects.

bullet

Assignments will not be accepted after the due date. Since personal emergencies happen to all of us, there are 30 extra credit points available to help recover missed points from a missed assignment or test. Be sure you always take advantage of all extra credit opportunities when they are available...because you never know when you will need those points!!

Header/Footer Requirements

Many of your assignments will ask you to include a header or footer with your name and chapter number. Refer to each assignment instructions to find out where to put your name in the file. Each assignment must have your name in the location specified in the instructions.

To create a footer in Word, Excel and PowerPoint, complete the following steps:

  1. Click Insert on the Ribbon to display Insert Tab
  2. Click the Footer button to display the Footer gallery.
  3. Click Edit Header in the Header gallery to switch from the document text to the header.
  4. Type the software, chapter number, a dash, the case number and your name. Ex: Word Chapter 1 - Mary Smith
  5. Click Close Header and Footer Button on right side of Ribbon.

When you have completed the above steps, you can use Print Preview to verify you have a footer at the bottom of the page.

*In Access, you will put your name in the Database Properties (refer to pages AC 60-61) instead of in a footer. You will enter your own name in the Author Property instead of the name specified there. To do this click on the Office button, click Manage, click Database Properties and put your name in the author area.
