    Hello & Welcome!

  LIS 2004

Introduction to Internet Research

Thank you for enrolling LIS 2004 online at SCC.  I would like to welcome you to this online course.  The entire course will be conducted online-there is no orientation for this course and no class meetings.  I am looking forward to working with each of you and hope that you will find the course both enjoyable and informative.  My name is Michael Schau and I am the instructor for the course.  My SCC email address is schaum@scc-fl.edu.   You may use this address to email me if you have any questions about logging into the course.  However, unless there is a problem and you cannot access the ANGEL course site, all email should be sent to my ANGEL email account within the course site.

Distance Learning Considerations:

To succeed in a Web-based course, you should be motivated, self-directed, and willing to work on your own.  This type of course is not for everyone.  If you like to interact regularly in person with a professor and classmates, this is might not be the course for you.  If you can solve computer problems on your own without asking for much help, this type of instruction should work well for you.  Good time management skills, self-discipline, and motivation are required to complete a course at a distance.

Course Description:

This course will present skills necessary for searching the Internet successfully. The course will review the parts of the Internet that are important for accessing information necessary or Gordon Rule papers, or research reports. The course will demonstrate how information retrieved on the Internet should be evaluated for its content and credibility, and will stress the development of critical thinking skills.  To take the course in the online format, however, you must have basic computer skills such as using email, navigating the Web, and using the keyboard and mouse.  Tests will be administered online.  Papers and assignments will be also submitted online via email.

ANGEL:

This course will be conducted entirely online within the ANGEL environment.  ANGEL is a course management program that allows for course delivery over the internet.  Student tracking, lecture notes, grades, testing, etc. will all take place within the ANGEL course site.

For more information about ANGEL, please refer to the Using ANGEL @ SCC document available on the Distance Learning web site at the following URL:  http://scc-fl.edu/dl/welcomeinfo.htm  You may also stop by the DL office (L-110, Sanford/Lake-Mary campus) to pick up a print copy if you happen to be on campus.

SCC is currently running ANGEL.

Getting Started:

As soon as the course begins, you should go to the course site and read through the syllabus and other general course information.  Most of your questions will be answered there, so be sure to read carefully!

The URL for ANGEL at SCC is:  http://ecampus.scc-fl.edu

You will need to have your ANGEL Login ID and Password ready to log in to ANGEL.  If you have any difficulty logging into ANGEL, please fill out the online problem form available at:
http://www.scc-fl.edu/dl or call the DL office at (407) 708-2424.

Reviewing the syllabus, class calendar, and the textbook will give you an idea of what will be expected of you in the course.  Be prepared and keep up with your reading and assignments.

Required Materials:

There is no required textbook. All the material will be online.

You must have everything in place the first day of class. This entire course will be conducted online. Good luck and again, I very much look forward to working with you in this course.
