You should also be able to apply function notation to a function defined by a listing as in the example below.

Use the vertical line test to identify graphs in which y is a function of x.  Click on the graph to see an animation of applying the vertical line test.  If the vertical line never intersects the graph in more than one point then the graph is the graph of a function.  If the vertical line intersects the graph in more than one point then the graph is not the graph of a function (since anywhere the vertical line intersects the graph in more than one point we will have more than one value of y for a particular value of x).  Only the graph in (b) below is the graph of a function.
