What Distinguishes Honors College Algebra from "Regular" College Algebra The mathematics content will be essentially the same. The Honors College Algebra course will investigate some of the mathematical ideas that support certain mathematical techniques and results. The "regular" College Algebra course might in some cases be content to implement the techniques and achieve the results with less conceptual understanding. The Honors College Algebra course will incorporate greater use of technology than the "regular" College Algebra course. This will include an introduction to Maple, DPGraph, Winplot, and Geometer's Sketchpad. Both Honors College Algebra and the "regular" College Algebra course make extensive use of the TI graphing calculator (the TI-84 Silver Edition is recommended). The Honors College Algebra course will engage in more analysis of the implications of the results of algebra application problems than the "regular" College Algebra course. It is anticipated that topics such as global warming and health care will receive attention.
Grading: Exams--Each exam will count 100 points. There will be no make-up exams but one exam may be re-taken at the end of the semester. If an exam is missed, that will be the exam "re-taken" at the end of the semester. Exam 1: Sections 1.1 - 1.7 Exam 2: Sections 2.1 - 2.6, 2.8 Exam 3: Sections 3.1 - 3.4, 3.6 Exam 4: Sections 2.7, 4.1 - 4.5 Exam 5: Sections 5.1, 5.2, 5.4, 5.5 Homework: Homework should be done and maintained in a notebook. I will look over homework at the time of each exam. Your homework will be evaluated based on effort and not checked for accuracy but please attempt to solve problems correctly. Your homework grade will be based on 100 points and count the same as one exam. Extra Credit: Extra points can be earned by doing selected extra credit problems. You can seek help in doing extra credit problems but you should understand what you have done before turning in an extra credit problem. You may be asked to come to my office to explain to me your solution to an extra credit problem. All extra credit must be turned in before the last day of class. Grade Calculation: 540 or more points A 480-539 points B 420-479 points C 360-419 points D Below 360 points F Attendance: Seminole State has a stated policy that a student may be withdrawn from a class by the instructor if he/she misses more than 10% of the classes. Although I do not go to this extreme, I will not award credit for a course if the student does not attend class regularly. You may choose to have an attendance grade that will count as 10% of your grade. If you do then your attendance grade will be computed from the percent of classes fully attended (arrived on time and did not leave early). Withdrawal Policy: You need to withdraw yourself before the withdrawal deadline if you do not wish to receive a grade for the course. Instructor initiated withdrawals after the College withdrawal deadline are no longer possible.
If fire, weather, or any other circumstance occurs that might lead to a cancellation of classes, call the following number to find out whether or not the college has closed. 407-708-4722
This syllabus is subject to such changes as the instructor may deem necessary and will announce in class. You are responsible for any changes announced in class. |
