Calculus III Syllabus

Instructor:  Lane Vosbury

Course:  MAC 2313  Calculus III

Text:  Calculus Eighth Edition by Larson, Hostetler, Edwards

(The Sixth and Seventh editions may also be used)

Grading:

Exams--Each exam will count 100 points.  There will be no make-up exams but one exam may be re-taken at the end of the semester.  If an exam is missed, that will be the exam "re-taken" at the end of the semester.

     Exam 1:  Sections 11.1 - 11.5

     Exam 2:  Sections 12.1 - 12.5

     Exam 3:  Sections 11.6, 13.1 - 13.9

     Exam 4:  Sections 11.7, 14.1 - 14.8

Exam 5:  Short exam on selected topics from Chapter 15

Homework:  Homework should be done and maintained in a notebook whether it is going to be turned in or not.  I might occasionally satisfy my curiosity by looking at your homework.  Students on the borderline between two grades at the end of the term may have their grade determined (up or down) by the quality of the homework in their notebook.

Extra Credit:  Extra points can be earned by doing selected extra credit problems.  You can seek help in doing extra credit problems but you should understand what you have done before turning it in.  You may be asked to come to my office to explain to me your solution to an extra credit problem.  All extra credit must be turned in before the last week of class.

Attendance:  SCC has a stated policy that a student may be withdrawn from a class by the instructor if he/she misses more than 10% of the classes.  Although I do not go to this extreme, I will not award credit for a course if the student does not attend class regularly.

Withdrawal Policy:  You need to withdraw yourself before the withdrawal deadline if you do not wish to receive a grade for the course.

If fire, weather, or any other circumstance occurs that might lead to a cancellation of classes, call the following number to find out whether or not the college has closed.      407-708-4722

This syllabus is subject to such changes as the instructor may deem necessary and will announce in class.  You are responsible for any changes announced in class.

You should have successfully completed MAC 2312, Calculus II, or its equivalent before enrolling in this course.  The Mathematics Department will not support a petition for a refund for the cost of tuition if you do not meet the prerequisites for this course and do not withdraw before the end of Add/Drop.

You need a graphing calculator for this course (required).  A TI-84 Plus Silver Edition or a TI-89 is recommended.  Maple would be a huge help.

Maple will be used extensively in this course and will be available in class and during exams.  The student version is available for purchase at a reduced rate.  Click here for purchase information.  It will not be required that you purchase your own copy of Maple but highly recommended since it is a wonderful tool and very helpful in this course and Differential Equations.
