Please note that you do not have to have the Vista operating system to run Office 2007. It will run with most current Windows versions. You can also visit the Microsoft Office site for more information.

Students will have access to computer labs with the required hardware and software on all SCC campuses. If you experience technical difficulties with your personal computer, be prepared to come to a campus lab to complete your assignments as no extensions will be granted due to computer problems. Click here for more information on campus lab locations and hours.

General Course Guidelines:

Overview of Course Material

The course is divided into three units plus a final culminating project. Each unit consists of doing assignments from the textbook, taking practice quizzes for each chapter, and taking a unit test comprised of multiple choice questions. The final culminating project is a presentation of your own design. The presentation guidelines and grading rubric are explained in detail in the assignments area. Your final presentation will be posted on the Discussion Board for your classmates to review.

Late Work

Assignments and quizzes for each chapter should be completed weekly by the due dates listed on the schedule. Completing your work weekly on a regular basis will help ensure your success in this course! It is suggested that you post a copy of the Schedule (see link at top of page or in Content area of ANGEL) somewhere where you will see it so that you do not forget due dates. It is your responsibility to complete all assignments on time. You can also use the Calendar tool in ANGEL to keep track of due dates.

Late work for each unit will be accepted up until the end of the unit deadline. For example, all assignments for Chapters 1, 2 and the Web Feature may be turned in until the Unit 1 due date shown on the Schedule. Once work for Unit 2 begins, no work will be accepted from
Unit 1. One point will be deducted from each project turned in late.

Collecting work up until the end of the unit gives you some leeway in case you have difficulties that keep you from completing a weekly assignment. However, do NOT wait until the end of the unit to try and complete all your work! Send in your work as soon as possible after a missed weekly due date. All deadlines are set and no late work will be accepted after the end of the unit.

No late work will be accepted on the Welcome/Orientation activities. No Unit exams may be taken late. No part of the Final Culminating Project will not be accepted late.

Extra Credit

Extra credit may be offered periodically throughout the semester. Watch for announcements in ANGEL.

Course Assignments Information

Specific instructions on all assignments are posted under the Content area of ANGEL.

Hands on Projects

You will be responsible for reading and working through each page of the textbook for the assigned chapters. You must have the textbook and use a computer to do all assignments. You should read each page carefully and do every step in the Chapter before completing the assigned lab and case projects at the end of the chapter. Tips and Additional resources will be provided in ANGEL. Communication tools, such as a Q&A Discussion Board and email, will be available so that you can receive assistance at any time with your assignments.

Required Footers and Filenames

You will be submitting all chapter assignments via Assignment drop boxes in ANGEL. There are generally 3 or 4 assignments for each chapter in the textbook. Be sure to complete all assignments. All files being submitted for a grade must include the following:

  • Save all files with your initials in the filename.
  • Omit any footers mentioned in the text and add a footer with your name. To add a footer, select the Insert > Header & Footer > On slide tab enter name in the Footer box > Apply to All. Credit for work will NOT be given if this footer information is not included at the bottom of each slide. You may use the default layout position for all footers. If the footer is hidden by part of a design template, it is still acceptable.
Quizzes

At the end of each chapter, a quiz consisting of up to 10 Multiple Choice and True False questions will be given. You may take each quiz up to 5 times. Your highest score will count. The questions on each quiz attempt will vary. Taking the chapter quizzes will help you prepare for the Unit Exams.

Unit Exams

At the end of each unit, you will be given an exam covering the three chapters in the unit. The questions for the Unit Exam come from the same test bank as the quizzes. These multiple choice and true false questions will be directly related to the material from your assignments. They will be  administered  according to the date on your calendar. No exam may be taken late. Failure to take the exam during the assigned dates will result in a grade of zero.

Final Culminating Project

Students will complete a comprehensive project utilizing skills learned throughout the semester. The project can be on any topic and each student's project will be unique. A description of required elements and a grading rubric will be provided. The final culminating project is worth 100 points and must be submitted by the due date listed on the Schedule. No late work will be accepted.

Academic Integrity:

You are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic honesty and integrity while in this course and as a student at Seminole Community College. In short, lying, cheating, stealing, or deception of any type will not be tolerated in any way, shape, or form. This means you may not use another student's work as your own. You may not allow another student to use your work. You may not obtain copies of prior semester's work or exams from previous students for your own use. If you submit work which is not completed by you or allow another student to submit your work, a failing grade will be given and I will pursue all academic sanctions available as listed in the SCC Student Handbook including dismissal from the college. If you have any questions about the college's code of academic conduct, please consult the SCC Student Handbook or contact me.

Participation:

This course will be conducted entirely online within the ANGEL environment. ANGEL is a course management program which allows for course delivery over the internet. Student tracking, lecture notes, grades, testing, etc. will all take place within the ANGEL course site.

For more information about ANGEL, please refer to the Using ANGEL @ SCC on the Distance Learning web site at http://www.scc-fl.edu/dl/angel. You may also stop by the DL office (L-110, Sanford/Lake-Mary campus) to pick up a print copy if you happen to be on campus.

Your participation is crucial to your success in this class. It is expected that you check into ANGEL to review the Student Discussion Board and your e-mail several times a week. You will also be reviewing lecture notes and assignment material. This is how you attend class.  It does not matter what time of day or night you check in.  This is the way the instructor and your classmates correspond with you. Please use the e-mail feature within ANGEL once the course begins and everyone can log in.

Postings to the discussion boards can be viewed by anyone in the class at any time, so if you have a question, post it to the board and another student or I will answer your question for you. The discussion board should should not be used for grade-related questions. You can email your instructor with questions, comments or concerns at anytime. Emails will be answered within 24-48 hours Monday through Friday. Please try asking and answering questions on the board rather than e-mailing the instructor. That way everyone can benefit from both the questions and answers. Chat rooms are available as well if anyone wants to set a date and time to meet and study. These tools will serve as your support system and can alleviate the disconnected feeling some distance learning students experience. Distance learning is about learning, not a classroom. The instructor is a facilitator more than a teacher.  Learning is your responsibility and will be accomplished by working within the virtual environment created with the students in the course.

If you do not access ANGEL several times per week, then you are not participating in class. School policy indicates that any student who is absent from class ten percent of the time may be dropped from the class without warning. If you are having difficulties and are unable to keep up with class, please let me know. I will try to help you in any way I can. If the problems persist and you are unable to complete this course, I expect you to administratively withdraw from the class. The deadline for withdrawing from a class is just before the midpoint of the semester. It is not the instructor's responsibility to withdraw students from class. Students who fail to withdraw will receive zeroes for incomplete assignments and exams which will result in a grade of F for the course.

Withdrawal From A Course:

If you encounter any difficulties at all or if you are considering withdrawing from the course for any reason, please contact your instructor without delay. The instructor may have suggestions that will allow you to successfully complete the course.

Students may withdraw themselves from any course without academic penalty up until the deadline set by the college. Once the deadline for withdrawing has passed, the instructor will not withdraw a student. Students who do not submit their assignments on time and who do not officially withdraw from the course will receive a failing grade.

You must enroll as an Audit student at the time of registration to receive an audit grade.

Disability Services:

Any student who has a disability and is in need of special services should contact Disability Support Services (Room S-002, Phone 407-328-2109) by the second week of class.

PBL (Phi Beta Lambda):
Students enrolled in SCC’s computer courses are encouraged to participate in the local chapter of the national student organization Phi Beta Lambda. SCC’s chapter has a history of success in state and national competitions, as well as service to our community. For further information, contact Sherry Jenkins in the Office Management Technology Department or visit the PBL Web site at http://www.scc-fl.edu/career.programs/ceo/office/pbl/default.htm
Microsoft Certified Application Specialist Program:

The Microsoft Certified Application Specialist Program is explained in detail in Appendix G of the Textbook. This certification provides a valuable industry credential or proof that you have the Office application skills required by employers. Our textbook is a Microsoft-approved textbook that covers the required objectives for the various exams. The Web page http://www.scsite.com/off2007/cert includes links to general information on certification, choosing an application for certification, preparing for, taking and passing the certification exam.
