Textbook:

Textbook bundles may be purchased at the Seminole State bookstore or ordered online at www.scc.bkstr.com. The required bundle is ISBN 9780077293093 which includes:

  • Textbook: Computer Accounting Essentials with QuickBooks Pro by Carol Yacht and Susan Crosson.
  • Software: QuickBooks Pro 2008. A 140 day trial version of QuickBooks software is included with the textbook.

Caution: If buying a used book, the software may not be included or the license may have expired. QuickBooks Pro 2008 will not run on a MAC computer.

The following textbook is also required but it is the same as the one used for APA 1111C Office Systems Accounting I as of 2009. If you took APA 1111C in 2009, you will not need to purchase this material again.

You have two options for purchasing the required course materials. You may purchase a textbook bundle (printed textbook plus CengageNOW access code) or an e-book bundle (online textbook included in CengageNOW access code). These materials can be used again for APA1112C Office Systems Accounting II. If you are searching for a used book, be careful to price both items as the bundle offers a significant reduction and is often the best value. The CengageNOW access code is approximately $70 if purchased separately. Caution: Do not purchase a used CengageNOW access card as these codes may only be used once. The access code is good for one student for one year. Textbooks may be purchased at the Seminole State bookstore or ordered online at www.scc.bkstr.com.

Option 1: Purchase Printed Textbook and CengageNOW access code:

If you prefer a printed hard copy of the textbook, then purchase  textbook bundle ISBN 9780324554618 which includes

  • Textbook: College Accounting, Chapters 1-27, 19th Edition by James A. Heintz & Robert W. Parry (ISBN 9780324376166)
  • CengageNOW Access Code (ISBN 9780324652734 or 0324652739)

Option 2: CengageNOW access code with e-Book (online access to textbook):

If you are comfortable doing all your reading online from your computer monitor, then this bundle will save you money. The textbook can be accessed online using the CengageNOW Access Code.  If you have a credit card, you can purchase the access code online at www.cengagebrain.com and receive your code immediately.

  • CengageNOW Access Code with e-book (ISBN 9780324652734 or 0324652739)
Hardware and Software Requirements:

You are required to have access to a computer with an Internet connection, an e-mail address, a file compression program (included in Windows XP or later and Vista) and a virus checker program. You must be familiar with using the Internet as all class communications will be conducted on-line. For best results, a high speed Internet service is recommended.

We will be using QuickBooks Pro 2008 software. This software is bundled with the Computer Accounting Essentials textbook. (Note: QuickBooks Pro 2008 will NOT run on a Mac operating system.)

Students will have access to computer labs with the required hardware and software on all Seminole State campuses. If you experience technical difficulties with your personal computer, be prepared to come to a campus lab to complete your assignments as no extensions will be granted due to computer problems. Click here for more information on campus lab locations and hours.

It is suggested that you post a copy of the Weekly Task Calendar somewhere where you will see it so that you do not forget due dates. It is your responsibility to complete all assignments on time. You can also use the Calendar tool in ANGEL to keep track of due dates.

Late Work

There will be a 10% penalty for any work turned in after the due date. Check the Weekly Task Calendar for due dates and late deadlines for all assignments. No work will be accepted after the late deadline on the Weekly Task Calendar. Failure to submit work by the late deadline will result in a grade of zero.

Extra Credit

Extra credit may be announced periodically in ANGEL throughout the semester.

Course Assignments Information

Specific instructions on all assignments are posted under the Content area of ANGEL.

Reading Assignments

You will be responsible for reading and working through each page of the textbook for the assigned Chapters.

These activities will be available in CenagageNOW. They consist of a Pre-Test, personalized Study Plan, and Post-Test. Only the score from the Post-Test will count towards your grade. Completing all parts of the Study & Learn tools will help you master the material in each chapter. These assignments will be worth 10 points each.

Homework

These activities will be available in CenagageNOW. They consist of a set of homework problems that reinforce the chapter material. These assignments will be worth 20 points each.

Quizzes will be worth 15 points and your highest score will count. Taking the quizzes all 3 times will help you prepare for the exams.

Exams

Exams will consist of two parts: Multiple Choice / True False questions in ANGEL and interactive problems in CengageNOW. Exams will be administered  according to the dates on your Weekly Task Calendar.  No Exam may be taken late. Failure to take the exam by the assigned deadline will result in a grade of zero. Each Exam will be worth 100 points.

QuickBooks Exercises

A variety of assignments will be given using QuickBooks Pro 2008. These assignments will be worth a total of 500 points.

Academic Integrity:

You are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic honesty and integrity while in this course and as a student at Seminole State College. In short, lying, cheating, stealing, or deception of any type will not be tolerated in any way, shape, or form. This means you may not use another student's work as your own. You may not allow another student to use your work. You may not work with another student on your assignments to the extent that you replicate each other's work. You may not obtain copies of prior semester's work or exams from previous students for your own use. If you submit work which is not completed by you or allow another student to submit your work, a failing grade will be given and I will pursue all academic sanctions available as listed in the college Student Handbook including dismissal from the college. If you have any questions about the college's code of academic conduct, please consult the Seminole State Student Handbook or contact me.

Participation / Attendance:

This course will be conducted entirely online within the ANGEL environment. (Students can not login to ANGEL until the first day of the semester.) ANGEL is a course management program which allows for course delivery over the internet. Student tracking, lecture notes, grades, testing, etc. will all take place within the ANGEL course site.

For more information about ANGEL, please refer to the Using ANGEL @ Seminole State on the Distance Learning web site at http://www.seminolestate.edu/dl/angel. You may also stop by the DL office (L-110, Sanford/Lake-Mary campus) to pick up a print copy if you happen to be on campus.

Your participation is crucial to your success in this class. Online course require a time commitment equivalent to on campus classes. Be prepared to spend 4 - 6 hours per week to be successful in this course. It is expected that you check into ANGEL to review the discussion forums and check your e-mail several times a week. You will also be reviewing lecture notes and assignment material. This is how you attend class.  It does not matter what time of day or night you check in.  This is the way the instructor and your classmates correspond with you. Please use the e-mail feature within ANGEL once the course begins and everyone can log in.

Postings to the discussion forums can be viewed by anyone in the class at any time, so if you have a question, post it to the discussion forum and another student or I will answer your question for you. The discussion forum should should not be used for grade-related questions. You can email your instructor in ANGEL with questions, comments or concerns at anytime. Emails will be answered within 24-48 hours Monday through Friday. Please try asking and answering questions on the discussion forums rather than e-mailing the instructor. That way everyone can benefit from both the questions and answers. Chat rooms are available as well on the Communication tab in ANGEL if anyone wants to set a date and time to meet and study. These tools will serve as your support system and can alleviate the disconnected feeling some distance learning students experience. Distance learning is about learning, not a classroom. The instructor is a facilitator more than a teacher.  Learning is your responsibility and will be accomplished by working within the virtual environment created with the students in the course.

If you do not access ANGEL several times per week, then you are not participating in class. School policy indicates that any student who is absent from class ten percent of the time may be dropped from the class without warning. If you are having difficulties and are unable to keep up with class, please let me know. I will try to help you in any way I can. If the problems persist and you are unable to complete this course, I expect you to administratively withdraw from the class. The deadline for withdrawing from a class is just before the midpoint of the semester. It is not the instructor's responsibility to withdraw students from class. Students who fail to withdraw will receive zeroes for incomplete assignments and exams which will result in a grade of F for the course. Last date of attendance will be determined by the the last email, discussion posting or assignment submitted.

Withdrawal From A Course:

If you encounter any difficulties at all or if you are considering withdrawing from the course for any reason, please contact your instructor without delay. The instructor may have suggestions that will allow you to successfully complete the course.

Students may withdraw themselves from any course without academic penalty up until the deadline set by the college. Once the deadline for withdrawing has passed, the instructor will not withdraw a student. Students who do not submit their assignments on time and who do not officially withdraw from the course will receive a failing grade.

You must enroll as an Audit student at the time of registration to receive an audit grade.

Disability Services:

Any student who has a disability and is in need of special services should contact Disability Support Services (Room S-002, Phone 407-708-2109) by the second week of class.
